Abstract
The Indian education system is undergoing a major transformation with the promotion of holistic reforms in assessment practices as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The policy emphasises on the competency-based, learner-centred and continuous assessment to do away with rote memorisation and high stakes examinations. It advocates formative assessment, holistic assessment of progress, flexible examination pattern and use of technology in assessment. The reforms aim to foster critical thinking, creativity, problem solving skills and lifelong learning competencies among students. This paper discusses the major assessment reforms proposed under NEP 2020 along with their objectives, key features, implementation strategies and potential challenges. The study concludes that adequate teacher preparation, institutional support, technological infrastructure and continuous policy monitoring are required for successful implementation of these reforms.
