Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a comprehensive global framework for achieving inclusive, equitable and sustainable development by 2030. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the 2030 Agenda consists of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets covering the economic, social and environmental dimensions of development. The goals seek to address poverty, hunger, health, education, gender equality, employment, inequality, environmental sustainability, climate change, peace, justice and global partnerships. India, as one of the world’s largest developing countries, has an important role in the achievement of the SDGs. The Government of India has adopted several institutional mechanisms for monitoring and implementing the goals, with NITI Aayog playing a central role in SDG localisation and monitoring.
